During Valencia’s public celebrations, chairs temporarily occupy the streets, altering familiar spaces and becoming part of the city’s ceremonial landscape. Their repeated appearance and the quiet transformation they bring to the urban environment caught Stanev’s attention, becoming a subject he returned to over several years.

Preparation, made during the celebrations of the Virgen de los Desamparados, belongs to this ongoing body of work. The photograph was made as the procession was dispersing, at the point when its participants and the temporary structures of the celebration were beginning to disappear from the streets.
