Ivailo Stanev is a Spain-based photographer whose work spans editorial photography, documentary projects, portraiture and independently developed photographic series.

For more than 25 years, he has worked across different countries and contexts, moving between commissioned assignments and long-term personal projects. His photographs have appeared on the covers and pages of Esquire, Playboy, Harper’s Bazaar, Maxim and other international magazines.

Editorial photography formed an important part of Stanev’s practice for many years, giving him access to people, places and situations that would later extend beyond their original commissions. Alongside this work, he continued to develop independent projects including E-motion, Corrida, Documentary Turn and The Colour of the Street.

His archive now encompasses photographs made across different periods of his career, from published editorial work to documentary photographs and conceptual series developed over many years.

Stanev’s photography has developed through different subjects and forms, but observation remains central to his work. People, gestures, places and situations recur across projects that may otherwise appear very different from one another.


Some photographs begin with events unfolding before the camera. Others are constructed through movement, colour or a deliberate photographic idea. Editorial assignments exist alongside long-term documentary projects and independently developed series.


What connects them is a practice built over time. Stanev often returns to subjects for years, allowing individual photographs to become part of larger bodies of work while retaining their independence as images.


His archive continues to develop as new photographs, projects and connections emerge from the work.

The archive isn’t a collection.

It is a world built over time, frame by frame.

Continuity is central to Ivailo Stanev’s practice. Subjects, places and photographic ideas often return across different years, allowing individual projects to develop gradually rather than around a fixed beginning and end.


This can be seen across the archive: in his long engagement with tauromaquia, in documentary photographs made across different countries, in editorial work that later became part of his independent archive, and in series such as E-motion and The Colour of the Street.


The result is an archive in which different periods and directions remain connected, while each body of work retains its own photographic language.
