Archival pigment print, numbered and authenticated

Within the narrow passages of the medina of Fès, light appears in fragments, cutting through spaces otherwise held in shadow. In Medina, this shifting light becomes the structure of the photograph, drawing the eye through successive planes of darkness towards the solitary figure beyond.

The image carries the spatial uncertainty of the old city — passages opening into other passages, surfaces appearing and disappearing, depth revealed only in intervals. The human presence is slight, almost absorbed by the architecture, yet it gives scale and direction to an otherwise abstract arrangement of light, stone and shadow.
