Archival pigment print, numbered and authenticated

Made during Els Enfarinats in Ibi, Spain, a centuries-old tradition held each year on the Day of the Holy Innocents. For one day, a group known as Els Enfarinats symbolically takes control of the town, imposing its own absurd rules and confronting the opposition in a battle fought with flour, eggs and firecrackers.

The photograph carries a force that seems at odds with the playful origin of the scene. Colour has been almost stripped away, leaving a pale, raw image in which the figure could belong as easily to a battlefield as to a celebration.
