Made in Argentina as part of Stanev’s long-term Children of the World project, the photograph grew out of an unplanned stop during a journey through the country. At an isolated house along the way, Stanev encountered a family he had never met, where a grandmother was raising several children.

The children regard the stranger with a mixture of curiosity and reserve. There is a hesitation in their attention, balanced by the impulse to come closer. The photograph preserves this first distance between strangers, before familiarity has had time to alter it.
