For years, Matt Black traveled through small towns and overlooked places across the United States. What you encounter in this book are modest streets, interiors, waiting rooms, storefronts, faces. Nothing dramatic is staged. The photographs are direct and stripped of embellishment, rendered in a dense, deliberate black and white.

As you turn the pages, you begin to understand the distances between places — and between people. Some towns feel suspended in time; others carry visible strain. Black does not underline these differences. He shows them and moves on. The rhythm of the sequence is steady, almost restrained, and that restraint is what gives the work its weight.

Short passages from his notes appear throughout the book. They read like traces of the road — fragments that stay close to the images without trying to interpret them.
