Author: Jürgen Schadeberg

Jürgen Schadeberg first photographed Spain in the 1960s, at a time when the country was still marked by restraint and silence. Decades later, he returned to many of the same locations. España – Then and Now places those two periods side by side.

The structure is direct: earlier photographs paired with later ones. Streets, squares, façades, beaches, everyday public spaces. What shifts is not only the architecture, but posture, atmosphere, the way people stand, gather, move.

Schadeberg does not force the comparison. He allows the images to hold their own tension. In some places the change is immediate; elsewhere it settles gradually into the frame. The differences emerge in the details — in architecture, in gesture, in what has changed and what has vanished.
