Made in the callejón in Requena, shortly before the torero Jesús Duque entered the arena, the photograph belongs to the final minutes of preparation before the corrida begins — when the matador is fully dressed, but has not yet stepped into his public role. Requena holds a particular place in Duque’s story as the town where his career as a torero began.

The photograph was published in Esquire, Issue #52, January 2020.
