ABOUT
Olha Stepanian is a photographer based in Cherkassy, a small city in central Ukraine. Her cinematic black and white photos quietly explore a variety of feelings and situations – loneliness and estrangement, bondage and freedom, restlessness, even gossip. From avant-garde, surrealist moments and provocative points of view to elegant intimacy and expressions of longing and seduction, women are the focal point in the Monochrome Hub Gallery's selection made from her work.
From behind her camera, she tells stories influenced by classic photographers like Rodney Smith (born 1947) – famous for his minimalistic and whimsical art, Sally Mann (born 1951) – known for her provocative shots of the naked and the dead and Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) – a pioneer of candid and street photography. Olha said: "Photography is my air. Through the photos I take I want to show history, moods, and most importantly, things people don't notice in everyday life."
